Why we're so focused on

Health

We look at our investment in health as a gift to our poodles, their puppies, and future members of the KCSP family. By ensuring the dogs in our breeding program are clear of genetic diseases commonly encountered in Standard Poodles and having key elements of their bodies evaluated by veterinary specialists, we are able to protect the well-being of our own dogs, and allow KCSP puppy owners to be able to focus on the more fun challenges of dog ownership.

We are blessed to be patients of Dr. Marty Greer, a canine reproductive legend, at Veterinary Village.

Anatomical Soundness

At Kettle Cove Standard Poodles, our breeding dogs have their hips, eyes and hearts evaluated to establish quality and detect any weaknesses or risk factors.

  • Pennhip for hip dexterity evaluation

  • CAER Eye evaluation

  • OFA Cardiac evaluation

Tests are to Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) standards and all scores are publicly available on the OFA database:

Genetic Clarity

We pride ourselves in having a clear understanding of the genetic codes of our poodle parents. We proactively screen for known mutations/conditions and proudly share these results.

  • Degenerative Myelopathy, DM (SOD1A)

  • GM2 Gangliosidosis (HEXB, Poodle Variant)

  • Osteochondrodysplasis (SLC13A1)

  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy, prcd (PRCD Exon 1)

  • Von Willebrand Disease Type I (VWF)

  • Neonatal Encephalopathy with Seizures, NEWS (ATF2)

Even though carriers don't always express the given conditions, we strive to breed clear dogs. We also have benchmarks established of our dog's COI, it is one of our goals to help improve the genetic diversity of purebred Standard Poodles with our offspring.
